Essential Floor Guidance: Low-Level Concerns, Active Supervision & Daily Hydration
Stepping into different nursery rooms requires sharp instincts and a clear focus on the basics that keep children safe. As a temporary practitioner, your presence on the floor directly impacts room safety, compliance, and how smoothly daily routines run.
This week’s update highlights three practical floor essentials: understanding low-level safeguarding concerns and whistleblowing, eliminating room blind spots during active play, and meeting statutory EYFS requirements for fresh drinking water accessibility.
1. Safeguarding: Low-Level Concerns & The Whistleblowing Pathway
Safeguarding culture under the latest statutory updates emphasises catching concerns early before they escalate.
-
What's happening: Settings are required to have clear policies for recording "low-level concerns"—minor behaviours or interactions by an adult that do not meet the threshold of harm on their own, but feel uncomfortable or inconsistent with professional boundaries.
-
What this means for temp staff:
-
Trust your gut: If an adult's conduct in the room feels inappropriate (e.g., using harsh tones, taking shortcuts on personal care privacy, or crossing professional boundaries), speak up.
-
Know the escalation route: During your morning handover, confirm who to speak to if a concern involves the Room Leader or manager. Knowing the setting’s whistleblowing route protects the children, the setting, and your professional integrity.
-
2. Ofsted: Active Supervision During "Blind Spots" & Free Play
Ofsted inspectors evaluate whether staff deploy themselves effectively across the learning environment rather than clustering together.
-
What's happening: Inspectors watch room dynamics to see if practitioners proactively identify and manage "blind spots" (such as reading nooks, sensory dens, or outdoor play structures) where children might be unobserved.
-
What this means for temp staff:
-
Spread out across the room: Avoid gathering near sinks or entry gates to chat with other staff. Position yourself where you have a wide, sweeping view of the area.
-
"Float and scan": Move between play stations while maintaining sightlines over busier, quieter corners. Showing inspectors and managers that you naturally cover room blind spots proves you are a proactive practitioner.
-
3. EYFS: Fresh Water & Hydration Accessibility
Under the EYFS statutory welfare requirements, nurseries must ensure that fresh drinking water is accessible to children at all times—both indoors and outdoors.
-
What the regulation requires: Water must be actively available throughout the day, not just brought out during scheduled snack times or mealtimes. Children should be supported to access water independently or easily prompt an adult when thirsty, especially following active play.
-
Why temp staff need to know this on the floor:
-
Day 1 Room Check: The moment you enter a room, locate where children’s labelled water bottles or the self-serve water station are kept.
-
Keep it filled & accessible: In warmer rooms or during high-energy garden sessions, remind children to take drink breaks. If a child’s water bottle is empty, refill it right away with fresh tap water.
-
Prevent mix-ups: Temporary staff are prone to bottle mix-ups! Check labels carefully before handing a bottle to a child to avoid cross-contact with allergens or germs.
