Early Years News: September Allergy Standards, Ofsted Independence Focus & EYFS First Aid
As early years settings prepare for the new academic year, maintaining rigorous safety standards and aligning with inspection priorities is essential for delivering outstanding care.
Here is a clear, practical breakdown of three key sector focus areas for the floor: upcoming September allergy and food safety guidelines, Ofsted’s focus on encouraging everyday self-care routines, and statutory EYFS requirements for Paediatric First Aid cover.
1. Safeguarding & Safety: New September Allergy Standards
Schools and nurseries across the UK are launching tightened allergy management protocols ahead of the September term to protect children with severe dietary conditions.
-
What's changed: Settings must enforce stricter cross-contamination controls, clear meal-separation routines, and transparent display of medical action plans.
-
What this means for you on the floor:
-
Day 1 Check: The moment you walk into a room, ask: "Where is the room allergy chart, and which children have dietary alerts or auto-injectors (EpiPens) today?"
-
Zero food swapping: Never share snacks or introduce outside food to the children.
-
Active supervision: Always sit at table height during meal and snack times to prevent choking and ensure no food is traded between plates.
-
2. Ofsted Focus: Promoting Independence & Self-Care Routines
Inspectors are placing a spotlight on how practitioners encourage everyday independence and personal self-care, rather than doing everything for the children.
-
What's changed: Inspectors observe routine moments—like hand-washing, putting coats and wellies on, wiping noses, and pouring water—to see if children are given the time to try for themselves.
-
What this means for you on the floor:
-
Step back before stepping in: Give children the chance to zip their own coats or tidy away toys before jumping in to do it for them.
-
Praise the effort: Use positive encouragement ("Great effort trying that zip yourself!") to build their confidence. Demonstrating patience during these small daily routines is a huge green flag for visiting inspectors.
-
3. EYFS Update: Paediatric First Aid (PFA) & Medical Awareness
The updated statutory framework reinforces strict requirements around emergency response and Paediatric First Aid (PFA) cover across all learning areas.
-
What's changed: Settings must ensure designated PFA certificate holders are not just on site, but immediately available across all indoor and outdoor areas at all times.
-
What this means for you on the floor:
-
Know the First Aider: During your morning room induction, check who the designated Paediatric First Aider is for your room/zone.
-
Location of Kits: Make sure you know where the room's first aid kit and cold compresses are stored so you can assist quickly if an accident occurs.
