Early Years Update: 3 Essential Floor Focus Areas for Temp Staff

Stepping into different nurseries as a cover practitioner means adapting quickly and knowing what matters most the moment you walk into a room. You aren't there to worry about administrative paperwork—your value is keeping children safe, engaged, and well cared for on the floor.

Here is a simple, practical breakdown of three key early years focus areas happening right now across Safeguarding, Ofsted, and the EYFS, and why knowing them helps you stand out as a top-tier temp:

1. Safeguarding: Your "Fresh Eyes" on the Floor

Current safeguarding guidance pushes settings to build a culture where everyone believes "it could happen here." That makes your role as a temporary practitioner especially valuable.

  • What's happening: Settings are moving away from passive policy reading toward active, everyday vigilance. Permanent staff can sometimes become accustomed to daily routines, while someone new brings a fresh perspective.

  • Why temp staff need to know this:

    • Trust your instincts: If you spot an unusual mark during a nappy change, notice a child who is usually bubbly becoming withdrawn, or observe an interaction that doesn't feel right, speak up immediately.

    • Pass it on before you leave: Never assume someone else has already seen it. Ask who the setting's Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) is at the start of your shift and report any observation directly to them before you head home.

2. Ofsted: Mealtime Choking Risks & Active Supervision

Ofsted inspectors are zeroing in on hands-on room routines rather than paperwork files, with an explicit spotlight on snack times, lunches, and weaning.

  • What's happening: Inspectors are watching how staff manage choking hazards and ensure children are actively supported while eating.

  • Why temp staff need to know this:

    • Sit at table height: Mealtimes are never a chance to tidy up or turn your back. Always sit directly with the children at their eye level so you have continuous line-of-sight.

    • Check high-risk foods: Before handing out fruit or snacks, check that high-risk choking foods (like grapes, cherry tomatoes, and cocktail sausages) have been sliced lengthways into quarters.

    • Ask about weaning stages: If you are supporting a baby room, always ask the room leader to confirm which stage of weaning a baby is on before offering finger foods or purees.

3. EYFS: Ongoing Suitability & Disclosure Rules

The statutory EYFS framework places a strict legal duty on nurseries to ensure that every adult caring for children—including agency and temporary cover—remains suitable at all times.

  • What's happening: Nurseries are strictly audited on their vetting records. Every member of staff is legally obligated to promptly disclose any changes that could impact their ability to work safely with children.

  • Why temp staff need to know this:

    • Stay fully transparent: This duty doesn't just mean formal cautions or convictions; it also covers any significant health, personal, or legal circumstances that could affect your practice.

    • Protect your agency profile: Always keep your compliance file completely up to date. If anything changes in your background or health that might affect your work, notify the agency right away so your clearance remains valid and you can be placed without delays.
