Essential Floor Guidance: Device Security, Language Interactions & Intimate Car

Every professional working across early years shares the statutory responsibility to uphold high standards of care, dignity, and compliance. Whether you are covering a single shift as a temporary practitioner, leading a room, or managing an entire setting, consistent floor-level practice is what keeps children safe, respected, and thriving.

For cover practitioners, showing up with sharp, up-to-date knowledge of everyday routines ensures immediate confidence on shift and seamless collaboration with permanent teams.

This week’s sector update breaks down three practical essentials for the nursery floor: securing mobile phones and smartwatches under safeguarding policies, using high-impact "serve and return" language interactions during Ofsted observations, and maintaining privacy, hygiene, and transparency during EYFS intimate care routines.

1. Safeguarding: Managing Personal Belongings, Smartwatches & Mobile Phone Policies

National safeguarding guidance and statutory provider requirements mandate strict protocols to prevent unauthorized digital recording or photography in childcare rooms and care areas.

  • The Sector Focus: Settings must enforce clear mobile and wearable technology policies to eliminate the risk of inappropriate image capture or distractions during supervision.

  • Why Temp Staff Need to Know This on the Floor:

    • Lock them away immediately: When arriving at a setting, keep your phone, smartwatch, and personal tablet secured in your allocated staff locker or staff room basket. Never keep your phone in your pocket on the floor.

    • Smartwatch alerts: Even if wearing a smartwatch for telling the time, disable notification alerts and camera triggers, or leave it off entirely if the nursery's policy prohibits wearable tech in the rooms.

    • Use nursery hardware only: If an activity calls for an observation photo, always use the setting’s designated nursery tablet or camera—never a personal device.

2. Ofsted: Targeted Language & Intentional Back-and-Forth "Serve & Return"

Under the inspection framework, inspectors look closely at the quality of adult-child interactions, actively observing whether practitioners build conversational depth rather than just supervising passively.

  • The Sector Focus: Inspectors evaluate how adults model language, expand on children's phrases, and use open-ended prompts during everyday play to build vocabulary and communication skills.

  • Why Temp Staff Need to Know This on the Floor:

    • Practice "Serve & Return": When a toddler points to a block and says "car," respond by extending their sentence: "Yes, a blue car! Where is it driving so fast?"

    • Ask open-ended questions: Replace closed questions that only need a "yes" or "no" with phrases like "Tell me about what you're making" or "What do you think happens next?"

    • Narrate quiet moments: In baby rooms and sensory play, narrate actions and textures ("soft sponge," "cold water," "stretching the playdough") to surround children with rich, descriptive language.

3. EYFS: Strict Intimate Care & Dignity Protocols

Under statutory EYFS welfare requirements, settings must follow rigorous personal care routines that safeguard children’s privacy, maintain infection control, and protect practitioners against allegations.

  • The Sector Focus: Ensuring nappy changing, toileting support, and soiled clothing changes maintain the child's dignity while keeping the adult within sight or earshot of colleagues.

  • Why Temp Staff Need to Know This on the Floor:

    • Keep open sightlines: Never close changing room doors completely or isolate yourself out of sight when carrying out intimate care. Always let a permanent colleague know: "I'm taking Leo to the changing mat now."

    • Follow PPE & cleaning routines: Always wear fresh disposable gloves and an apron for every individual change, and spray/wipe the mat with the setting's antibacterial solution before and after.

    • Check the room's logging system: Every setting uses an app or a physical chart to record the time, type of change (wet/soiled), and any creams applied. Confirm where this is logged so parents receive accurate handover notes.
