Early Years Update: 3 Key Rules Explained Simply for Temp Staff

When you step into a nursery for a cover shift, keeping up with changing rules can feel overwhelming. You don't need to read pages of paperwork to be great at your job—you just need to know what matters on the floor!

Here is a simple, no-nonsense breakdown of three key early years updates coming into force this September 2026, and why knowing them makes you an invaluable temp practitioner.

Safer Recruitment

1.Tighter Background & DBS Rules

The Department for Education (DfE) has updated the rules around criminal record checks (DBS) and disclosures for anyone working in nurseries.

  • What's changed: All staff and volunteers helping in a room need a full Enhanced DBS check, even if someone is watching them. Everyone working in childcare must also report any formal arrests or police charges immediately, not just formal convictions.

  • Why temp staff need to know this:

    • Your ID matters: Nurseries will double-check your paperwork and DBS before letting you enter a room. Always have your photo ID ready at the desk so you can start your shift without delays.

    • Professional transparency: Always keep your agency updated on your details so we can keep your file 100% compliant and ready to work.

2.How Ofsted Will Inspect Rooms

Ofsted has refreshed its Early Years Inspection Toolkit. Inspectors are focusing heavily on how staff interact with children day-to-day, rather than checking off mounds of paperwork.

  • What's changed: Inspectors expect every staff member in a room—whether permanent or temporary—to follow basic safety rules strictly.

  • Why temp staff need to know this:

    • Ofsted talks to agency staff! If an inspector visits while you're on shift, they might ask you basic safety questions.

    • Your Day 1 Checklist: The moment you walk into a room, ask two quick questions: "Who is the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) today?" and "Where is the allergy board?" Knowing those two answers proves you're a top-tier professional.

Safeguarding

3.Safer Mealtimes & Allergy Rules

There is a fresh push across the sector on food safety, choking prevention, and managing allergies during snacks and lunch.

  • What's changed: Nurseries are taking a zero-tolerance approach to mealtime mix-ups and choking risks during play or lunch.

  • Why temp staff need to know this:

    • Never guess with food: Since you won't know every child's dietary needs on day one, always double-check the room allergy board and confirm with the Room Leader before giving any child a snack or drink.

    • Sit and supervise: Mealtimes aren't a time to tidy up. Sit at table height with the children, chat with them, and keep a close eye on anyone eating.
