Beth's Top Tip: Why Leaving a Great Impression is the Ultimate Secret to Temping Success
As a London Consultant, I speak to nursery managers across the city every single day. One question I frequently get from our candidate network is: How do I make sure I stand out and get asked back?
The truth is, the secret to why some temps get requested back by name before they’ve even finished their first shift isn't just about what’s on their CV. It’s about the impression they leave from the second they walk through the door.
Nurseries are fast-paced, vibrant, and incredibly busy environments. When you’re temping, managers notice energy, initiative, and a genuine willingness to muck in. Showing up ready to support the permanent team is exactly how you make yourself indispensable.
It’s why our core mantra here is so close to my heart: Get on the floor, play with the children, wipe noses, and keep the nursery tidy.
When you embrace this mindset, you aren't just covering a shift; you’re making a real impact on the day. Here is how that breaks down in practice:
1. Get on the floor and play
Don't stand back or wait to be directed for every little task. Dive straight into the room's energy, interact with the children at their eye level, and lead with enthusiasm. Getting involved in their play shows the permanent team that you are passionate and proactive.
2. Wipe noses and keep it tidy
Notice the little things that keep a room running smoothly. If a table needs wiping down after an activity, toys need clearing away, or a child needs a tissue, jump straight on it. Supporting the permanent staff with the frantic reality of the daily routine makes you an absolute lifesaver.
The Stepping Stone to Bigger Opportunities
Leaving a brilliant impression opens so many doors in the Early Years sector. It builds your reputation across different settings, massively boosts your confidence, and—if you’re looking for a permanent role down the line—puts you at the very top of a manager's list.
To all our amazing Nexter temps out there: thank you for always showing up with this incredible energy. You make us proud every day!
