Father's Day Week: The Chaos, the Conversations, and How to Keep Your Rota on Track

Did you know that the very first Father's Day card on record was a clay tablet? Thousands of years ago in ancient Babylon, a young boy named Elmesu carved a message into clay wishing his father good health and a long life. Thankfully, paper, glue, and a mountain of glitter are a bit easier to fit into a backpack today.

Anyone working in early years right now will recognise the energy of Father's Day week. Nursery rooms up and down the country are currently buried in paint, and someone has definitely managed to get handprints on the ceiling. Nobody is admitting to it.

It's a brilliant week. There's something genuinely lovely about watching a three-year-old put their absolute all into making something for the person they love most.

As a team of former nursery practitioners (Emma and Beth), we genuinely miss it!

More than just crafts

This week also asks a lot from your team in quieter ways. Nursery staff are brilliant at handling the thoughtful conversations that come up around Father's Day — making sure every child feels included, whether they're celebrating a dad, stepdad, grandad, uncle, or another special person in their life. Keeping a room full of excited toddlers calm while doing that is a real skill, and it doesn't always get the credit it deserves.

June is a busy one

Between the craft sessions, the start of the summer holiday calendar, and the usual June bugs going round, rotas tend to feel stretched this time of year. Getting cover sorted early takes the pressure off your permanent team and keeps things running smoothly.

We're here to help. Whether it's a last-minute shift or regular support through the summer, get in touch and we'll get you sorted.
