Making Everyday Moments Count: Why Care is the Heart of Early Years Learning

While reading through the updated Birth to 5 Matters guidance, one key theme stood out above everything else:

Care as an essential part of learning.

When you're stepping into different settings, it’s easy to feel like the "real" work only happens during structured play or planned activities. But this guidance is a beautiful reminder of the truth.

Nappy changes, wiping noses, helping at mealtimes, putting on coats, or settling a tired child to sleep aren’t tasks to rush through so we can get back to "learning."

They are the learning.

For a young child, these highly personal, routine moments are where trust is built. It’s where they develop early language through your close conversation, feel secure in a new relationship, and begin to understand themselves.

As temporary staff, your ability to bring warmth, patience, and presence to these everyday routines is what makes a child feel safe, even on a day when their regular key person might be away.

High-quality Early Years practice isn’t about setting up the most elaborate activities.

It’s about making the everyday, quiet moments count.
